Housing eligibility limit is the published normal time to degree minus 1 year for Ph.D., M.D. and Ed.D students; two years for terminal masters; and two or three years for MFA students depending upon their program. Residents may submit a request for lease renewal if he/she is within his/her housing eligibility limit. Requests for renewal are subject to review and approval and based on space availability.

Eligibility to remain in on-campus housing is contingent upon maintaining fulltime student status, satisfactory progress towards degree requirements, and adherence to Housing and University policies.

General Information regarding the Current GFH Resident Policy:

Normal Time to Degree (NTTD)

  • The actual time to degree completion may be longer than the published NTTD.
  • NTTD published in the UCI catalogue is for current year only; please consult with Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) for all other years.

Length of Stay Limit
The length of stay limit is calculated from the date you were enrolled into your original academic program, not the start date of your housing contract. If you change academic programs, the normal time to degree for that program will be taken into account, but your date of enrollment into your original program will be used as the start date to determine your length of stay limit.

Original Move-in Date
Your original move-in date is the date when you first moved into Graduate and Family Housing. This date is related to the specific length of stay policy that applies to you. If you move from one GFH apartment to another, you will retain your original move-in date. If you vacate from Graduate and Family Housing and move back at a later date, your new move-in date will become your original move-in date.

Notification of status

  • Within the month of May, all current residents will receive notification of their original move-in date, the normal time for their program, and their expected vacate date.
  • Students who have passed or are approaching their normal time to degree will be asked to contact their community housing office to either arrange their vacate date or request an extension.
Frequently Asked Questions for Current Residents (as of 2/1/06)

  • Is there a difference between Normal Time to Degree (NTTD) and Normative Time to Degree (NTTD)?
  • No
  • Is my length of stay in housing equal to my NTTD?
    • If you moved in after May 31, 2002 and before February 1, 2006, your length of stay in housing equals your NTTD, calculated from your date of enrollment in your original academic program.
    • Residents who moved in after February 1, 2006 have a length of stay equal to NTTD minus one year.
    • Residents who moved in prior to May 31, 2002 are exempt from the length of stay policy.
  • Where can I find the normal time to degree for my Ph. D. program?
  • Normal Time to Degree (NTTD) is published on the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) website found at www.rgs.uci.edu/grad/academic/time_to_degree.pdf.  Find your program on the left hand column, and the NTTD is listed under the “N” column. If your Ph. D. program is not listed in this document, please contact OGS.
  • What is the normal time to degree for my terminal masters program?
    • NTTD for programs in Dance & Music is two academic years.
    • NTTD for programs in Drama, Studio Arts, and Creative Writing is three academic years.
    • NTTD for all other terminal masters’ programs is two academic years.
  • What is my original move in date if I transferred between Palo Verde and Verano Place?
  • Your original move in date is the date when you first moved into either community. You will receive notification from the housing office of your original move in date, the policy governing your length of stay, and the date your eligibility in housing expires.
  • When will I be expected to vacate if I have already exceeded the NTTD for my program?
  • If your move in date is prior to 6/1/02, you are not affected by the recent length of stay limits. However, you are expected to maintain satisfactory progress toward your degree. If your move in date is 6/1/02 or after, you will be notified by the housing office regarding when to submit a 45-day notice to vacate or request an extension.
  • When I reach my NTTD, when am I expected to vacate?
  • All residents are expected to submit a 45-day notice of intent to vacate following completion of their degree and/or upon reaching their NTTD. Students reaching thier NTTD in June are expected to vacate by August 15th of the same year.
  • Are there exceptions to stay in housing beyond NTTD, and if so, how long?
  • Any exception to stay in housing must be jointly approved by OGS and Student Housing. Exceptions are contingent upon availability of space. The review process is currently under development.
  • Will I be eligible for Graduate and Family Housing up to normal time to degree if I move off campus and plan to move back sometime in the future?
  • You will be subject to whatever length of stay policy is in effect at the time when you move back on campus. Length of stay is calculated from your date of enrollment into your original academic program.
  • How will changing my academic program affect my length of stay?
  • Your time in housing will be cumulative and will apply toward your new academic program’s NTTD. So, if you change from a 3 year program to a 5 year program, the years you have already been in housing will be applied toward your length of stay for the 5 year program.
  • What is the length of stay in housing if I am an undergraduate student?
    • Undergraduates who have signed a limited term contract must vacate by the ending date specified in their contract.
    • Housing policy length of stay for all other undergraduate students is based upon award of first bachelor’s degree or after completion of 15 undergraduate academic quarters (or equivalent semesters) at any postsecondary institution, whichever comes first. Summer Session is not counted towards this limit. Credential program certificates can be included in this term limit.
