« The Palo Verde Housing Satellite Dish Policy | The short notice in the Palo Verde Flyer » |
As I mentioned before, I had a meeting scheduled with Bill Zeller, the assistant vice chancellor of student housing, for August 16.
The Housing IT manager, Kevin Ansel, joined into that meeting.
I addressed a couple of issues:
Channel freezes
They said that we have to call the housing office if there are problems, and the housing office will then forward the complaint to Mr. Ansel.
This obviously means that there is no 24/7 service. For outages over weekends or after 5pm, nothing is going to happen until the next business day.
Lack of a channel lineup
While we have a listing of stations, there is no channel lineup available. Mr. Ansel claimed that the channel lineup is available on a website, and that, the week before the meeting, an email was sent out to Palo Verde residents announcing the website. I had not received such an email. Mr. Ansel promised to look into that, and the next day I actually found an "Emergency Flyer" at my door, which listed the website.
I also complained that the website was not linked to from the main housing website, and they fixed that later the day.
The site is http://www.housing.uci.edu/cabletv/
This is the notice found on the emergency flyer:
The lack of options in choosing a provider
First off, they claimed that about 50 people in PV had cable before, and about half of them complained about the switchover.
Both Mr. Zeller and Mr. Ansel claimed that Palo Verde is the only housing complex where people could get cable before. I have learned recently that there are people living in Verano Place who have Cox Digital Cable now, so that would contradict the administration...
According to Mr. Ansel, changing to another cable provider on an individual basis is not possible because the cable cut-off point, where the main wire goes in, is outside of PV.
I explained the issues of putting up individual satellite dishes, with the PV dish policy not allowing that for most people.
It was mentioned by Mr. Ansel that in Verano Place, people were able to put up dishes on their patios. They put them up on poles and the like.
Mr. Ansel acknowledged that in PV is is pretty much impossible to do that, and he also acknowledged that it is impossible for most people to have a dish inside their apartments, because of the way the dish has to be aligned with the satellite.
So, given the complaints, Mr. Zeller stated that they are "considering" to allow people who already live in PV to put up dishes in some way. They won't allow that for people moving in to PV. This "grandfathering in" is definitely not finalized.
